Edinburgh University was first founded in 1583 and it is now a UNESCO world Heritage site that sees more than 47,000 people applied for a place there every year. Due to these high figures it is classed as being the 3rd most popular university in the country. During the Age of Enlightenment the University gained Edinburgh a reputation as being a chief intellectual centre.
In recent times the University has had graduates such as: the mathematician Thomas Bayes, Gordon Brown the former prime minister of the country, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, JM Barrie and many more.
Today the university has been split into three separate area which are – Science and Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences and Medicine and Vet Medicine. All of the courses that are undertaken at this university are held over two semesters so that it is the same as most other universities that are currently in the United Kingdom.
