The Royal Victoria Dock is one of London’s three Royal Docks and out of all of them it is the largest. It has undergone redevelopment and is now part of Docklands. The dock was first opened in 1855 on part of what was Plaistow Marshes and it was designed specifically in such a way that it could easily accommodate the large steam ships that would frequently area. It was also the first of London docks that would use hydraulic power in order to operate the machinery that was in place there.
The dock was incredibly busy and very successful until it was severely bombed in World War II.
However, after this time trade resumed and things went back to normal until the 1960s when there was a decline in the shipping industry in this area. From the late 1990s onwards redevelopment began and now the doctor is a very popular place to live and work in.
