Wakefield is an area in West Yorkshire and it is situated close to the Pennines near the River Calder. It has a population of around 77,000 and it has been a popular market town since the Middle Ages when people from all over the local area would go there to buy and sell their goods. Wakefield has been known for being a centre of the corn trade in the 18th century as well as being a hub for textiles and coal mining. The Industrial Revolution at the start of the 19th century make Wakefield a very wealthy market town and it was one of the main inland ports where wool and corn could be traded.
Today Wakefield is a busy town that has a good mixture of shops, offices, industrial units and so on.
It also has great transport links to areas such as Leeds and many people from the local area will commute there to their jobs.
