Alnwick, pronounced to rhyme with ‘panic’, is a traditional county town in Northumberland, England.
The town is on the River Aln, 32 miles (55km) south of Berwick upon Tweed and the Scottish border. The town centre features twisting cobbled streets, with numerous shops to choose from, and the centre of the town is the marketplace and market cross. The town is known for its multi-purpose arts centre and the Willowburn Sports and Leisure Centre.
The town is full of history, dating back to 600 AD, and featuring the second largest inhabited castle in England, after Windsor Castle.
Alnwick Castle was the location for Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films and it is open to visitors between April and September – the Alnwick Garden is open year-round.
In medieval times, Alnwick was a walled town, although persisting poor economic conditions meant the town wall was never properly completed.
Links to the towns rich history can be found across the town, such as at the Pottergate Tower or Hotspur Tower.
