The Holburne Museum is named for Sir William Holburne’s collection of 4000 objects, pictures and books, donated to the city of Bath by his sister in 1882 with the intention of forming Bath’s first public art museum and gallery. The museum opened in 1893, and has expanded its collection since to include paintings by Gainsborough, Stubbs and Turner. It is housed in the former Sydney Hotel, once the host of grand visitors to Bath in the early 19th century.
