At the heart of the town is its market square, with an obelisk erected to mark the Jubilee of King George III. There is an annual reading of the Charter every August held in the square, which dates back to a tradition from Elizabethan times when a charter was granted to hold fairs. St Mary’s Church was first built in the Saxon times and is one of the oldest buildings still standing in the town.
