As suggested by its name, the town of Coalville has its roots in the Industrial Revolution. Adjacent to the former site of the Snibston Colliery is the Century Theatre, Britain’s oldest surviving travelling theatre, renovated and reassembled in the late 1990s. Its auditorium showcases music, dance and drama, as well as films for local residents. There’s even a small display of photographs and archive material from the theatre’s travelling days, when young actors such as Judi Dench and Helen Mirren graced the Century stage.
