Gateshead College is a further education establishment, for 16 to 18 year olds, that resides in the town of Gateshead, in the North East. It first opened in 1955 and was opened by the Duke of Edinburgh. Today, it sits in its new £9 million site on the Baltic Quayside. The Baltic campus has a vast range of facilities which include a gym and aerobics studio, a 200 seat performance theatre, a Baltic salon and spa and even a Japanese garden.
Over £75 million pounds was spent on developing the college over six campuses for both vocational and academic courses. The Academy for Sport being based at Gateshead International Stadium and Team Valley the skill academy campus for Automotive, Engineering, manufacturing, logistics and construction. All of which opened in 2008.
Gateshead College specialises in sport and has partnerships with rugby league team Gateshead Thunder and ice hockey team Newcastle Vipers. Creative industries and has connections with the Chamber of Commerce and The Sage Gateshead and Low Carbon and renewable energy training and has a partnership with Nissan.
The College also created Zero Carbon Futures in 2011, to provide a variety of community and nationwide courses, intended to develop the region as one of Europe’s leaders in the manufacture of low carbon vehicles.
