Open since 1886, James Street Station is one of the oldest deep-level underground stations in the world. Its platform depth meant that it was also the first station accessed by hydraulic lifts. Its outer building is much more modern though, having had to be rebuilt after the destructions of the James Street Tower during the Blitz. Sitting on the Wirral line, James Street provides excellent access to both the city of Liverpool and Birkenhead across the river.
