The original Whiteleys department store was created by William Whiteley in the 19th century, and today’s shopping centre retains several Grade II listed architectural features alongside its many restaurants and clothing stores. William Whiteley also left a more sensational legacy: in 1907, a man claiming to be Whiteley’s illegitimate son murdered him on the shop floor. However, the Whiteleys store persisted, and in 1912 it was opened by the Mayor of London himself.
