French wax sculptor Marie Tussaud came to London in the early 19th century to escape the Napoleonic Wars and opened a museum. Although Madame Tussaud herself died in 1850, her museum continues to this day, and is now one of London’s most popular tourist attractions. The original displays included figures of criminals and victims of the French Revolution, but the collection has developed over the years and you can now see Madonna, Barack Obama and even Darth Vader immortalised in wax.
