Queen’s House in Greenwich was commissioned by Anne of Denmark, the queen of King James I. Built between 1616 and 1635, it is considered one of the most important buildings in British architectural history, being Britain’s first consciously classical building. Designed by the architect Inigo Jones, it also contains the first centrally unsupported helical stairs constructed in England. Entry is free, and visitors are treated to an internationally renowned art collection, including work by Lowry and Canaletto.
