The Albert Memorial, opened in July 1874, is 54m tall and took over ten years to complete. The memorial was closed in 1983 after bits of mosaic and other materials began to fall from the crumbling structure, which was in dire need of restoration. It was not unveiled again until 1998, after a huge project which included the regilding of the blackened statue of Albert himself.
