Malham Cove is a substantially sized curved structure of limestone, that resides north of Malham village in North Yorkshire. A waterfall which brought meltwater from glaciers during the culmination of the last Ice Age, more than 12,000 years ago was how Malham Cove was created.
The Cove is surrounded by numerous streams, some of which you can follow on trails, some which go underground and twists and turns to unknown depths. Experiments have found that there is a complicated system of caves and tunnels running through the limestone cliff, of which is suggested to be around 50,000 years old. In December 2015, Malham Cove became a waterfall for the first time in many centuries due to the substantial rainfall that fell due to Storm Desmond, despite the cave’s structure usually being able to carry water away before it gets to the fall.
Today, Malham Cove is a popularly recognised site in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It is highly popular with cave divers and climbers, for both sport and traditional types including rock climbing. The Cove was not only featured in a BBC television series, ‘Seven Natural Wonders’, it was also a shooting location for ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part one.’ Harry and Hermione set up camp on top of the cove on the limestone pavement and look out across the Malhamdale and Malham village.
