One of Stotfold’s most interesting features is the Stotfold Watermill. Sitting on the River Ivel, it was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. Though changing ownership and facing profit problems many times, it lasted for hundreds of years until the building was burnt down in a fire in 1992. However, the waterwheel survived, and remains the widest corn-mill waterwheel in the UK. The site has now been restored to its former glory and opened to the public.
