Roker Pier is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. It was built between 1885 and 1903 whilst Sunderland was a major British port. The lighthouse, with its distinctive red and grey granite hoops, is open to the public for guided tours. In 2012, the pier and the lighthouse benefitted from an extensive restoration project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Sunderland City Council.
