Walsall is an industrial market town in the West Midlands. The Industrial Revolution changed it from a village of 2,000 people to a town of over 86,000 in around 200 years. The town manufactured everything from saddles, chains and buckles to plated ware, and the nearby limestone quarries also brought prosperity to the area. The town is so closely connected with its industrial history that its football team is known as the Saddlers.
Nowadays, Walsall is an interesting little town with lots going on, including two museums. Walsall Museum features local history objects, mostly from the manufacturing trades, and it also has a space for temporary exhibitions. Walsall Leather Museum, meanwhile, displays a mixture of leather goods and has recreations of leather workshops. There is also a section dedicated to showcasing the work of designers using leather today.
Visitors to the town also love to visit the Walsall Arboretum, The Light Cinema, and the New Art Gallery Walsall, which houses works by Jacob Epstein, Van Gogh, Monet, Turner, Renoir and Constable, as well as an exciting programme of temporary exhibitions.
