Birmingham was at the centre of the Midlands Enlightenment which gave way to the Industrial Revolution and by 1791 it was called the first manufacturing town in the world.
Birmingham was also known for being a centre of very skilled trades which meant that it was once a highly prosperous place to live with high social mobility.
