South Hampstead is part of the London Borough of Camden in inner north-west London. Notable residents include Kylie Minogue, Barry Humphries and Natalie Imbruglia.
South Hampstead railway station is located on Loudoun Road, around 550 yards south-west of Swiss Cottage Underground station. It opened in 1879 and was originally named Loudoun Road station, after the road on which it is located. Its name was changed to South Hampstead station in 1922.
The original station building has been replaced, and a new footbridge constructed. Those into architecture or history can find traces of the removed station canopies and the older footbridge in the brickwork of the retaining walls on both sides of the line.
The station’s greatest claim to fame is that it was evocatively described by Sir John Betjeman in his 1952 essay First and Last Loves.
London is known for its high prices, but Hampstead prices are even higher than the London average, making it difficult to park in the area without spending a lot.
