Woburn Sands is named after the nearby Woburn estate and the sandy soil around it. The introduction of the railway in the mid-19th century triggered the first expansion of the town. It became known for having a healthy climate and many Londoners travelled there to relax and take in the fresh air. It expanded further as workers from nearby Bletchley Park were stationed there during the war and house were built in the post-war housing shortage.
