Barry Island is a peninsula and seaside resort which forms a part of the town Barry, in the Vale of Glamorgan in South Wales. The stretch of coast off Barry that runs to the Bristol Channel has the second highest tidal range in the whole of the world behind the Bay of Fundy in Eastern Canada.
The peninsula used to be an Island until the 1880s when it became linked to the mainland due to the expansion of Barry. Before then, the only access to Barry island was by foot over the sand and mud during low tide, or when there was a high tide and a ferry ran to it.
Barry Island was once the home to Butlins, a popular holiday camp, however it is more renowned for the beach and Barry island pleasure park, due to it being used as a setting on Gavin & Stacey, a highly popular BBC television show. Another BBC show, Doctor Who was also filmed on Barry island, the episodes ‘Empty Child’ and ‘The Doctor Dances’.
The development of the railways and further tourist attractions on the island saw by 1934 over 400,000 visitors flock to the fairground and beach over the bank holiday in August. It still to this day attracts tourists from all over, who want to ride on roller coasters in the pleasure park, tan on the sandy beach or have fish and chips on the pier.
