Volkswagen's highly-anticipated ID.3 pure-electric hatchback has emerged from Euro NCAP's gruelling testing programme with a maximum five-star score.
The model, pitched by VW as the start of its third key chapter and therefore as important as the Beetle and Golf that have gone before, scored highly across the board.
Adult Occupant, Child Occupant, and Safety Assist categories were awarded 87%, 89%, and 88% respectively, whilst Vulnerable Road Users scored 71%.
It bodes well for a number of models de to arrive in coming months, as the ID.3 is the first vehicle to be built on the VW Group’s MEB platform. This architecture has been designed specifically for electric vehicles, and will underpin EVs from Seat and Skoda, as well as additional VW EVs.
EuroNCAP's Secretary General Michiel van Ratingen, said: "The ID.3 represents the direction of travel for the car industry in recent years. The climate crisis means that we must all adapt to a cleaner future and electric cars will become the nom in the years to come.
"Euro NCAP will continue to ensure that saving the planet does not come at a cost to safety and I am glad to see that the ID.3 - the latest generation of the people's car - does not compromise in this regard."
The latest round of testing by Euro NCAP has also seen the Plug-in Hybrid variant of the Toyota RAV4 see the conventional hybrid's 2019 five-star score extended to this model.
