Royston grew at the intersection of two major and ancient roads, Ermine Street and Icknield Way. A cross was erected in the town to mark the crossroads, probably around the time of the Norman Conquest. Named after Lady Rose, the cross underwent various name alterations until it became Roisia’s Cross. Eventually, this lent its name to the town itself, evolving from Roisia’s Town to Royston in the 14th century.
