Shanklin is a traditional seaside town situated on the south east coast of the Isle of Wight. Located on Sandown Bay, Shanklin is the southernmost of three settlements in the bay. There are around 21,300 inhabitants in the area. Shanklin’s main attractions are the sandy beach, Old Village, and wooded ravine. The Old Village, located at the top of Shanklin Chine, has pretty thatched cottages and tea rooms.
The section of beach next to Shanklin is split into Small Hope Beach and Hope Beach. The esplanade is located above Hope Beach, and it hosts traditional seaside attractions such as an amusement arcade, a crazy golf course, and a children’s play area. Shanklin Sailing Club is located at the North end of the esplanade. Shanklin used to have a pier, but this was destroyed in 1987 by the Great Storm.
Car ferries to the Isle of Wight are run by Red Funnel from Southampton and Wightlink from Portsmouth and Lymington. There are several car parks in Shanklin.
