Neath is a town near Swansea, and about 45 minutes’ drive from Cardiff. It is home to around 20,000 people, and dates back to the Roman times. There is evidence that they were building forts in the area as early as 74 AD.
Neath Castle was thought to have been built between 1114 and 1130. It was destroyed in 1321 during a rebellion against King Edward II of England. It was rebuilt in 1377, and this was probably when the gatehouse was added, which is the best surviving feature today. Nearby, you’ll find the Neath Abbey and Gatehouse. Founded in 1130, this had become one of the wealthiest abbeys by the 13th century. Later, during the Industrial Revolution, it became a copper smelting plant. Today, you can still see the layout of the abbey and most of the buildings.
The town is home to the beautiful Gnoll Country Park, which offers over 200 acres of greenery to enjoy. It has duck ponds, a weekly run, and a 9-hole golf course. The smaller Victoria Gardens can be found right in the centre of town near the Gwyn Hall; a refurbished Victorian theatre with a 73-seat cinema.
