Old Hunstanton is a great summer vacation spot in Norfolk in the east of England. It is known for the sandy beach that is popular with tourists, kite surfers and families. Interestingly, Old Hunstanton Beach faces west so you are able to watch the sunset from this idyllic spot.
Old Hunstanton is a quiet village over winter - at one point in 2001 the population dropped to under 50 people. People have since moved back to the village which now has a population of around 550. Although the village is small, there are still a handful of cafes, pubs and shops with accommodation available as well.
The beach at Old Hunstanton is popular with families as it’s sandy shores slope gently into the sea making it a reasonably safe swimming spot. It’s also a great place for a family photo with stunning cliffs, golden sands and of course the sea. Dogs are allowed on Old Hunstanton beach, and it is also a good spot for kitesurfing.
Most people come to Old Hunstanton for the wonderful beach, but there’s some history to explore nearby too. Old Hunstanton Lighthouse is now decommissioned, and the current building dates back to 1840, although there has been a lighthouse on the cliffs since the 17th century. The lighthouse was home to the World’s First Parabolic Reflector, and it’s white exterior is popular with photographers.
If you’re visiting Old Hunstanton Lighthouse keep an eye out for the ruins of St Edmund’s Chapel. The remaining stone archway lines up perfectly with the lighthouse, so take the opportunity to grab a unique photograph. The parish church of St Mary is also Grade-I listed and dates back to the 1300s.
This quiet village is located next to ‘New Hunstanton’ or as it is known now, Hunstanton. This larger town has its own character, and if you can’t find what you’re looking for in Old Hunstanton, it’s newer sibling has a few more shops and restaurants.
