Hartlepool United Football Club, who have played at Victoria Park stadium since 1908, are nicknamed The Monkey Hangers. This moniker originated when a monkey was hanged in Hartlepool following the ship wreck of a French military ship during the Napoleonic Wars. The only survivor of the wreck was a monkey, apparently wearing French military garb. Following this, the monkey was tried and hanged.
There is a car park located at the ground, which can fill up quickly and is somewhat expensive. To make a visit to Victoria Park Stadium quicker, easier and cheaper pre-book your parking space before arriving for any Hartlepool United matches. The nearest train station is Hartlepool, roughly a 10-minute walk to the ground. It provides services to Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, and London King’s Cross.
The Millhouse Inn is the closest pub that serves food and allows away supporters. Alternatively, The Causeway, located near Hartlepool Station, is another popular location. Interesting attractions in the city centre include, the Museum of Hartlepool, HMS Trincomalee in Heartlepool Quay, and Heugh Battery First World War Museum.
