Dartmouth is a popular tourist destination in the county of Devon. This destination town is located on the banks of the River Dart making it a beautiful place to holiday. There are some great, sandy beaches - including the famous Castle Cove and Sugary Cove which both offer views of Dartmouth Castle.
The landscape around Dartmouth is a protected landscape and is made up of the Dartmoor National Park and has been labelled an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This makes the area around Dartmouth popular with walkers and explorers of all ages.
The township has a long history due to the location of the deep-water port for sailing vessels. Famously, Dartmouth became the home of the Royal Navy, and during the Hundred Years’ War was attacked. The mouth of the estuary was then closed with a giant chain at night to prevent further attacks. In more recent history, some boats that took part in the D-Day landings left from Dartmouth.
If you visit the town at the end of August you will find the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta, which is held every year over 3 days. It is a popular and traditional event that draws large crowds as well as markets and musical performances. The Red Arrows often do a fly-by and the Royal Navy sends a guard ship as well.
The markets at these events are a great place to find a unique souvenir, and there are plenty of unique stores and cafes, pubs and restaurants around the town. It’s worth spending a morning or afternoon exploring all the shops around Dartmouth.
Dartmouth also hosts other annual events throughout the year including beer festivals in February and July, a Christmas candlelit event as well as a music festival in June. Part of what makes Dartmouth a popular attraction year-round, other than the events, is the weather. Dartmouth has mild winters and hot summers.
