Greenway is a stunning place to explore with family, or somewhere to just take a quiet stroll on a sunny day. The garden is a beautiful, leisurely place with the South Walled Garden full of hydrangeas, and a vinery, peach house and vegetable plot as well.
Another magical place in Greenway is the fernery which is especially tranquil with a water fountain and a moving dog cemetery where resident Agatha Christie’s dogs are buried. Other popular attractions include taking in the view of the River Dart from the Top Garden, and visiting The Battery and Boathouse.
Of course, you can’t visit Greenway without taking a look at the Queen Anne style Greenway House where Agatha Christie and her family spent their holidays. The rooms of this stately home are full of items from china to silverware and books that the Christie family collected over the years.
If you’re planning on spending a day at Greenway you’ll enjoy the drinks and snacks at the Barn Cafe. The shop at Greenway is a great place to pick up a unique souvenir. You’ll find seasonal plants to take home to your own garden, as well as fashionable items like scarves and bags. Of course, there are notebooks and other local items available too. You can even pick up a copy of one of Agatha Christie’s books.
Greenway Estate is around 2 miles from Galmpton and has been occupied in some form since the building of a mansion in the late 16th century. While this mansion is no longer standing, the current Greenway House and a greenhouse - both added later - are still there.
There are also 4 holiday cottages available for rent if you would like to stay in the picturesque landscape with views of the River Dart. These cottages range in size from sleeping couples to large families.
Greenway makes an appearance in several of Agatha Christie’s novels including The A.B.C. Murders, Five Little Pigs, Towards Zero and Dead Man’s Folly. The famous author had been living in nearby Torquay when Greenway House became available, and enchanted she and her husband brought it in 1938. Agatha Christie and her husband Max Mallowan lived at the house until their deaths, and the building is now Grade II listed.
If you’re planning a visit to Greenway don’t forget to bring your dog - dogs are welcome at the estate.
