Croydon University Hospital, which used to be known as Mayday Hospital between 1923 to 2002, is a substantially sized district general hospital situated in Thornton Heath in south London. It is managed by the Croydon Health Services NHS Trust.
The hospital has over 670 beds, and some facilities which include a day surgery suite with three theatres, eight operating theatres, two obstetric theatres and a recovery room and overnight amenities for parents. There is also a 24-hour accident and emergency department (A&E) which sees over 120,000 people yearly, with 41,000 being admitted for emergency care every year.
The Maternity unit provides both consultant led services and a midwife led birth centre, the hospital also has its own Special baby care unit (SBCU) as well as high dependency and intensive care units.
The hospital originated from an infirmary of the Croydon Workhouse which opened in 1885 and since then had extensive work and name changes, making it into the busy and popular hospital it is today.
