Trowbridge, is a town full of an abundance of industrial history and lies in the South West of England in the county of Wiltshire. Trowbridge dates back as early as the 10th century. It was included in the Domesday book in 1086 by the name of Straburg, which was what Trowbridge used to be known as. During that time, it had 24 households, living in the then village, with plenty of arable land.
In the 14th Century, Trowbridge established as the hub for woollen cloth production and became a major player in the following centuries, even after the decline in the 19th and 20th Century. Trowbridge’s West of England Cloth managed to preserve its gold standard status for exceptional excellence until the very end. The last Mill in Trowbridge closed in 1982 and is now home to the Trowbridge Museum and Art Gallery, along with Boswells café, where you are able to learn all about the rich woollen cloth history through the ages.
It sits just 25 minutes from Bath, a very popular tourist location and has great public transport links and direct trains to London, the South West, South Wales and the Midlands. Due to this, Trowbridge is often used as a great base to explore the regions and other attractions in close proximity such as Stonehenge and the Roman Baths. The town is a haven of independent boutique shops, along with the more modern high street outlets and array of restaurants, pubs and cafes. A weekly market is run every Wednesday which includes a variety of local stalls.
