Where is Rochester Castle located?
Rochester Castle is right in the heart of Rochester on Castle Hill, about an hour’s drive out of London.
What is there to see near the castle?
The Guildhall Museum is housed in a building which dates back to 1687 and is home to objects like a 200,000 year old axe that visitors can touch and the world’s most complete set of 18th century cabinet maker’s tools. The Rochester Cathedral has a crypt, shop and exhibition, chapel, and library. If you’re looking for a bite to eat, be sure to check out the Café in the Crypt. Who wouldn’t enjoy a cup of tea in a 13th century crypt? Then, be sure to take a tour of a restored Tudor-style townhouse at Eastgate House.
How accessible is Rochester Castle?
There are several features to make Rochester Castle more accessible for everyone, including accessible toilets, handrails, braille guides, and audio tours with transcripts. Guide dogs are also allowed throughout the grounds.
Please note that the castle is not wheelchair accessible, and there is a 144-step spiral staircase to the top of the castle, and 50 steps up to the shop.
