Box Hill is a popular park in Surrey around 20 miles from London. It is part of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and includes over 30 species of butterfly as well as orchids and some rare plant species.
The name comes from an ancient box woodland on the west-facing slope of the hill which overlooks the River Mole. This part of Box Hill is managed by the National Trust who look after the many walks in the area. The National Trust also runs the on-site cafe, servery, shop and discovery zone.
The countryside of Box Hill is open from dawn until dusk. Popular walks include the Box Hill Stepping stones walk which is around 2 miles long and takes an hour and a half. This walk takes you from Salomon’s Memorial, through the Yew woods, over the Stepping stones at the River Mole, through Burdford Meadow and past the Box Hill Fort.
Box Hill Riverside Walk is another popular walk which takes you along the River Mole for around 3 miles. Keep an eye out for dragonflies and other insects and animals on this walk. You may even see some of the cattle belonging to Box Hill Farm. This walk also passes the Victorian era Pixham viaduct.
If you want to visit Broadwood’s Tower you can take the Box Hill Happy Valley circular walk. This 2.7 mile walk takes around an hour and a half and does include some steep steps that some visitors may find challenging or unsuitable.
Dogs are also allowed at Box Hill but must be on a lead and under control when livestock are grazing. There are also plenty of open spaces for family picnics, and accessible paths are available along the North Downs Way. Box Hill is also popular with cyclists, with the Box Hill Olympic Circuit popular.
The National Trust website provides wildlife spotting guides as well as maps of available walks and information about the route. The website also provides seasonal information about Box Hill, as well as information about volunteer work.
