The site of the Lyceum Theatre in Sheffield has been occupied by a theatre since 1879. The original theatre, Grand Varieties Theatre, was a wooden building originally designed as a circus. It burnt down in 1893. The current building is the last surviving example of an Edwardian auditorium in Sheffield, and seats 1068 people. It serves as a venue for touring West End productions, with recent favourites including Hairspray, Mamma Mia! and Shrek The Musical.
