St Leonard's Tower is thought to be the only remaining part of a castle that was built between 1077 and 1108 by Gundulf, Bishop of Rochester, who founded St Mary’s Abbey. Others think it might have been built by the Bishop Odo of Bayeux, who was the half-brother of William the Conqueror.
