Ashton Court, which resides just West of Bristol in the North Somerset region is an estate and mansion. The grade I listed building and stabled are owned by the city of Bristol.
Ashton Court has been the location for the manor house from as far back as the 11th century. It was believed that a reinforced manor was erected on the site and was present from William the Conqueror to the Bishop of Coutances Geoffrey de Montbray. The manor has been renovated significantly by a succession of past owners since it was built. The longest reigning family was the Smyths, who owned the manor from the 16th to the 20th century.
During the First World War, the mansion was used as a military hospital and within the Second World War, it was an army transit camp. The last of the Smyth family died in 1946 and the once magnificent mansion soon became neglected and fell into abandonment. The Bristol City Council however acquired the manor and estate in 1959.
The estate which grew from the original grade 1 listed deer park, encompasses 850 acres of open grassland and woods. Is named on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens of special historic interest in England and is the home of the Forests of Avon Trust charity. Within the grounds are two pitch-and-putt golf courses, an orienteering course, mountain bike and horse riding trails and a disc golf course. It also namely became the setting for numerous leisure activities that include the Bristol International Kite Festival and the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta.
