The Grand Theatre and Opera House was built in 1878 in protest to the music hall tradition, thought by upper class society to lower the tone of entertainment. The theatre took 13 months to build, and was heavily influenced by the architecture of European churches and theatres. The first performance was Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, and since then many famous stars, including Julie Andrews, have graced the prestigious stage.
