The Peterborough Cathedral is located in the centre of Peterborough, a city home to around 200,000 people in Cambridgeshire. Katharine of Aragon, the first wife of Henry VIII, was buried here in 1536. Mary, Queen of Scots was buried here in 1587.
There is thought to have been a Roman building on this site, possibly a temple or monumental arch. In 655, a monastery was founded and built where the cathedral stands today, and was later destroyed in 870, possibly by Viking invaders. The monastery was refounded in around 970, and then mostly destroyed by a fire in 1116. Construction on the replacement cathedral began in 1118 and it was consecrated in 1238. This cathedral is still standing today and is mostly intact. The original wooden ceiling still remains in the cathedral today, the only one of its type in England, and one of only four surviving wooden ceilings from this period in all of Europe.
Today, the church is open for regular services and offers a Highlights Tour of the ground level for just £5 per person. This tour explores the key features of the building's history and architecture and usually runs on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
